AWD, Manual, Hatchback, Japan-Built, It was basically a Mini-WRX

hear me out: it was extremely comfortable, easy to drive, quick when it needed to be, wrapped in leather and tech toys - while priced the EXACT same as a fusion sport of the same era. Public perception was actually great(owned one for about a year) and there’s a reasonable amount of affordable aftermarket

People only seem to remember the transmission issues

Internet don’t care if it is a German engineered 300hp, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive car with a manual transmission that weighs under 3,000lbs and can out-corner and out-brake most vehicles ever produced, all while costing $5-10k less than what a new BRZ goes for, JUST LOOK AT THE HEADLIGHTS!!!1one

I like the looks of the 996, especially the rear.

Understated styling, sub-7 second 0-60 with the V8, Jag engineered suspension (and Jag engine in the form of the AJ-V8 or the AJ-V6, a Jag modified Ford V6) on a platform still used for the XF and the only Lincoln produced in the past sixty years with a manual.
Sadly, like its S-Type brethren, you either get the manual or the V8, not both.

I’d take the manual v6 for sure. Too many horror stories with that v8

I can’t speak specifically for the Ford variant in the LS, but my Jag has basically the same engine and as long as the secondary timing chair tensioners are upgraded to aluminum from plastic, it’s a pretty rock solid engine.

I wouldn’t call these underappreciated — these are by far the common 911s around here (and anywhere apparently).

I think I may be the only person in the world who actually likes the headlights as long as they're well maintained.
![]() 08/20/2016 at 13:09 |

Awkward headlights, first water cooled 911, front half shared with the Boxster, IMS bearing issue, RMS issue (like that hasn’t been fixed on every car by now), etc., etc. Even your “most common 911" remark provides another reason why it is inferior to every other 911.
Plenty of internet reasons to hate on the 996, which is fine by me. The venomous hate allows a car like this to be daily driven by a guy like me instead of locked up in some rich guy’s garage like most 993TTs.

The XK is one of my favorite cars ever made and I never shut up about that fact.

Amount of time I spend looking at the headlights while actually driving and enjoying my 996: 0
If you want to see a car with ugly headlights, look at the Nissan Juke.

Wait, the #1-selling truck since the Declaration of Independence is underrated? That first one is super cool.

For the first art and science car, the first car where Cadillac actually gave a shit about image in the 2000s, the CTS did it pretty well. It handled very well, was decently reliable after its first year, and had some potency from the 3.6L V6. The only reason I can see that it gets shafted for the German rivals, besides it being not a German car, is the interior, which only suffers from bad design, not bad quality.
Source: owned one for three years. Left nothing but smiles for 60,000 miles.

Not an S8 L but I have a Co-Worker with an A8 L, such a good car to ride in. So comfortable, so well put together, and sounds very nice from the 4.2L V8. And it was super cheap because 2008 and depreciation

My favorite: The Honda CR-Z.
Many people love the styling, but hate the performance. They don’t like the hybrid/sports car idea. I love it, though. It is underpowered for a first driver like me, and comes in a manual!
